The exhibition Morphings presents two works from different periods of Tomislav Mikulić’s artistic practice, connected through the artist’s long-standing exploration of the relationship between image, code, and processes of transformation.
Prijelaz teksta u sliku (Transition of Text into Image, 1972–1975) is a digital animation that showcases early computer experiments in which textual sequences, through the artist’s own algorithms and programming solutions, are transformed into visual structures. Mikulić used the programming languages FORTRAN, Assembler, and BASIC, and developed numerous programs and algorithms, including Morphing (1973) for transforming one form into another and Parametric Font (1973) for generating and manipulating letterforms. These two algorithms were applied in the animation Prijelaz tekst u sliku (1972–1975). On the poster for Mikulić’s exhibition at Galerija Nova in 1976, ten phases of morphing the word TEKST into SLIKA were presented.
Morphing Head (2025) is a film depicting the aging of a person through the aesthetics of vintage computer animation known as morphing. The unusual deformations that occur in the transition between two images symbolically reflect the challenges and transformations brought about by the passage of time. The artist hand-drew two self-portraits—one recent and one from his youth—which served as the key frames for the animation. The drawings were processed into an audio file and then sent to an oscilloscope, which decodes the signal and displays it as animation, creating an intriguing interplay of creativity through both analogue and digital technologies.
The exhibition can be accessed through personal mobile devices at Korčula’s St. Mark's Square. This digital art presentation format is organized by the grey) (area and realized in cooperation with the Korčula Town Museum. The Wi-Fi Gallery grey) (area has been set up on Pivilion, a free and open operating system developed by Dina and Vedran Gligo of Format C. The wireless local area network (WLAN) is freely available and introduces digital artwork automatically, without a password or further action, to anyone connecting with the Wi-Fi network.
About author
Tomislav Mikulić (b. 1953), a pioneer of computer graphics and computer animation in Croatia, studied electrotechnics and graduated from the Graphic Arts Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, in the class of Prof. Albert Kinert. Already as a student, he created a series of computer graphics and began exhibiting his work, including at the exhibition New Tendencies 5 in 1973. During these years, he independently developed computer programs and algorithms with which he produced the first computer-animated films in Croatia, presented for the first time at his solo exhibition in 1976 at Galerija Nova in Zagreb.
In 1980, he became Head of Design in the Graphics Department at Television Zagreb, where he introduced electronic graphics and computer animation. In 1991, he opened his own 3D animation studio in Melbourne. He is the author of numerous animated title sequences for various events, has taught at several schools and academies, and has exhibited in many exhibitions in Croatia and abroad (including Bit International 2007 in Graz and Bit International 2008 in Karlsruhe).
